The right question is: which material produces the safest surface, at the lowest total spend, with the best documentation? On all three counts, liquid calcium chloride wins for most cold-climate commercial sites.

The three real options

Liquid calcium chloride: works to -25°F, fastest melt, lowest material use, best documentation. Highest per-pound cost. Pre-wetted rock salt (rock salt sprayed with CaCl₂ brine): better melt than dry salt, lower material use, moderate cost. Dry rock salt: cheapest, slowest, limited to about +15°F.

What 'best' depends on

Temperature range you need to cover. Surface type (concrete vs. asphalt). Incident-risk profile (retail vs. industrial). Tenant expectations. Insurance requirements. For most retail, hospitality, healthcare, and office properties in cold climates, liquid CaCl₂ — or pre-wetted salt at minimum — is the right answer.
