Calcium Chloride for Gravel Driveways

One application, a whole dust season. How much product a driveway needs, what it costs, when to apply it, and why it outlasts water by months.

How much product your driveway needs

Liquid calcium chloride needed by driveway size (0.35 gal/yd² standard rate)
Driveway sizeApprox. areaGallons neededTypical applied cost
10 ft × 200 ft222 yd²~78 gal$35 – $60
12 ft × 500 ft667 yd²~233 gal$105 – $175
12 ft × 1,000 ft1,333 yd²~467 gal$210 – $350
14 ft × 1,500 ft2,333 yd²~817 gal$368 – $613
16 ft × 2,640 ft (½ mi)4,693 yd²~1,643 gal$739 – $1,232

Ranges assume $0.45–$0.75 per applied gallon. Short drives carry a minimum trip charge, so the smallest jobs land higher than the math suggests — combining with neighbors on the same road is the cheapest way to do it.

Getting it right

  1. 1. Grade and crown first. A graded, crowned surface with a slight center rise sheds water and holds the treatment. Applying to a washboarded drive locks the washboard in place.
  2. 2. Make sure there are fines. Calcium chloride binds the fine material in the aggregate. A drive that has lost all its fines needs fresh gravel before treatment or there is nothing to bind.
  3. 3. Apply at the right rate. 0.30–0.45 gal/yd², evenly, with a calibrated distributor. Over-application wastes product and can leave the surface slick until it binds.
  4. 4. Give it 24–72 hours. Traffic can resume within an hour, but the full bind sets over the next day or three, especially with a little humidity or light rain.
  5. 5. Repeat annually. Most drives take one application per year. Each year the surface generally holds better because the fines stay put instead of blowing away.
