Chemistry and core differences
Both are chloride salts, both are hygroscopic (they attract moisture from the air), and both work for dust control and winter deicing. The differences come down to temperature performance, activation humidity, and corrosivity profile.
Cold-weather performance
Calcium chloride has a clear edge for cold-climate winter operations. Practical effective temperature is about -25°F for CaCl₂ vs. about -5°F for MgCl₂. For Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and most of Canada, CaCl₂ is the default winter choice.
Dust control performance
Both work for road dust control. Calcium chloride activates at lower humidity, which is why it dominates in drier climates and longer dry seasons. Magnesium chloride works well in humid climates where activation isn't a bottleneck.
When DOTs specify MgCl₂
Some DOTs specify MgCl₂ for specific corrosion-control reasons or as part of a regional preference. Both are recognized by AASHTO. For municipal work, check your specifying agency's preference before choosing.
